Just noticed that the latest WordPress.org update has been out since Thursday. This time round the update does the following:
- Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.
- Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
- The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
- A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
- Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.
- Translation of role names fixed.
- wp_page_menu() defaults to sorting by the user specified menu order rather than the page title.
- Upload error messages are now correctly reported.
- Autosave error experienced by some IE users is fixed.
- Styling glitch in the plugin editor fixed.
- SSH2 filesystem requirements updated.
- Switched back to curl as the default transport.
- Updated the translation library to avoid a problem with mbstring.func_overload.
- Stricter inline style sanitization.
- Stricter menu security.
- Disabled code highlighting due to browser incompatibilities.
- RTL layout fixes.
If you’re into that sort of thing, you can read all about the changes between 2.8 and 2.8.1 here, and more details are here. I upgraded using the auto-upgrade feature in the dashboard and it took under a minute.
Quick Note: WordPress 2.6.1 is out. If you are running an older version, especially if you haven’t even
gone to 2.6.0 yet, you should upgrade – you’re missing out on new functionality and you may be at risk of having your site taken over.
Things to remember when upgrading: deactivate your plugins first, not all plugins work with all versions and you may need to find alternates. Check that your themes will support the latest versions and that any custom code you may have inserted (you did comment the code, didn’t you?) won’t produce conflicts.
Finally, read the documentation for upgrading. If you are new to WordPress.org and need to know how to install it, there is documentation for that, too. If you get stuck, the WordPress.org forums are a source of knowledge and help – search first and then ask your question in the right sub-forum.
It’s been a while since I wrote anything here, but here are two important announcements for anyone running the .org version of WordPress.
Firstly, WordPress 2.6 is now out. There are, as usual, lots of new things in this release and they ae all listed here. One thing I noticed is that I have had to add to my
.htaccess file because all my previous URLs stopped working. For example, the URL to this post is
http://www.lostaddress.org/2008/07/17/wordpress-26-spam-karma-2/ and under the previous release of WP, the URL would have been
http://www.lostaddress.org/index.php/2008/07/17/wordpress-26-spam-karma-2/ – spot the difference? If you were using a similar method, make sure you check your links! So download it, install it and check out the changes (and fix things where necessary).
Secondly, the excellent Spam Karma 2 plugin has been sort of discontinued. The plugin creator and developer, Dr Dave, no longer has enough time to dedicate to the development of the plugin. Instead, he has opened up a Google Code page and is looking for others to continue the delopment of the project. If you have the mad skillz and time required, please contact Dr Dave. The plugin is now released under the GPL version 2.
For anyone using the plugin, or planning to use it, all you need to know is that it hasn’t had significant work done to it in quite some time (apart from keeping up with WordPress releases) and it still works as well as ever. Spam Karma 2 is an excellent anti-spam tool which gives a great alternative to Akismet. I’ve been using it for ages and have only had to worry about the occasional manual spammer.
So, not terribly exciting, but informative.
I feel a wee bit guilty. I haven’t updated this site in ages, leading Mr and Mrs Norris Webster of Cleethorpes to believe that the site is now obsolete. It’s not – it’s just that I have had nothing to say and a long time to say it. Additionally, I had a 2 week holiday in August and I now have a brand new drug habit – Judge Judy on Youtube. With all that, and general life-iness, my posting habit has been cured. Not a good thing for this place.
The holiday was absolutely fantastic. The weather held all the way through – it rained for the first time as we were heading to Orlando International Airport to come home. The temperature was between 95° and 105° Fahrenheit (about 35° – 40° Celsius) and the heat was, surprisingly, pretty comfortable out there. We hit the Disney parks, of course, and spent an awful lot of time by the pool. I returned refreshed and tanned. And then got back to work. No photos right now, unfortunately, the PC they are stored on is cream-crackered and won’t actually POST – the power unit seems fine (it works, at least) but the PC won’t work. Once we get the data from the hard drive I’ll get some pics up.
What else has been happening? Not a lot really. I have come to the conclusion that the internet is very much like television – loads of choice but not much to actually look at. I still go to the sites I used to, but I’m less likely to actually browse beyond them. I suppose, as a sort of content creator myself I’m to blame, but I’m sharing that blame with teh rest of teh world – I may go down but I’m taking all you slaaags wiv me!
So anyway, I’m back, posting and rambling away. But no free porn here, not even for $10.
This thing was last posted to on the 30th April. I’m not dead, btw.
That said, in other news, in 1 hour and 45 minutes I will be another year older. This is because I rock and is not a sheer coincidence based on the amount of spare time my parents had some years ago. And, as of today, I have been with my partner for some 11 years. All times are in GMT and your mileage may vary.
Watch this. That is all.
